With approximately 86% of freight transport in and around South Africa transported on road, there is a constant need for niche operators within the transport industry to move abnormal loads and fragile goods.
Johannesburg-based company Consolidated Transport, Rigging and Logistics has a small fleet of 25 Hino vehicles, with almost all fitted with Pesci cranes. Although small, the company offers a wide range of services which includes cross-border deliveries in Sub Saharan Africa and countrywide.
Founded in 1994 by Nico van Jaarsveld, the company has grown and offers speciality services that include moving X-ray machines, CT scanners, air conditioning equipment, and fragile electrical equipment.
Van Jaarsveld says the trucks are serviced often and happens on site at the company’s depot in Bredell. He adds that Hino East Rand looks after any repairs.
Van Jaarsveld also says he is very particular about oil changes and specifies top grade lubricants, with oil changes on all models, except the 700 Series, taking place every 10 000km.
“The 700 models have an oil change every 15 000km,” he says.
He also believes that making sure oil is clean is a major factor in the low amount of maintenance required on the Hino engines.
Reliability of Hino trucks
“I have only had one engine fail and that was due to work done on it by a roadside mechanic when the truck had a problem on a delivery trip and the correct procedures were not followed,” van Jaarsveld says. “Otherwise there are several Hinos in the fleet of 25 that have covered well over a million kilometres with no repair work required on the engine, only regular maintenance.”
The fleet consists of 1.5-ton, 8-ton and 14-ton models and includes freight carriers and truck-tractors.
He says this fleet has been very good with low operating costs since 1997, when he confined his fleet to only include Hino trucks.
“Reliability is very important in our type of operation where the cargo is specialised and usually has to be delivered in a specific time frame,” van Jaarsveld says. “We cannot afford breakdowns.”
Van Jaarsveld says “the main reason for our success is that we understand the business and have the right equipment for the job, which has enabled us to build a solid core of loyal customers”.
He began his career as a salesman in the electronics business and says that it was there that he learned “how this type of equipment can be damaged if it is not transported correctly”.
That led to him buying a used truck with a crane which he used to set up the company.
