Refuse collection in KwaMashu and uMlazi has once again been disrupted as a result of industrial action by contractors.
As an interim measure, the eThekwini Municipality says it’s Cleansing and Solid Waste unit will be utilising internal resources to ensure continuity of the services in the affected areas.
“The City is appealing to residents to be patient during the interruption of service. We are assuring affected customers that we are working around the clock to clear the backlog,” the municipality notes.
The relationship between contract workers and the municipality has been turbulent in recent weeks with numerous bouts of strike action.
Things escalated recently when two senior managers were held hostage by members of a business forum demanding payment.
